What are the differences between the Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX is a question that is often asked and a search term often used when researching which is the best Amazon Kindle to buy.  So in the spirit of keeping the Kindle Ebook Reader site useful, here are the crucial differences between the two ebook readers.

Kindle Price

Well, the first obvious difference is the price.  The Kindle 2 is currently $259 (well, it was, but now the Kindle 2 price is a mere $189!) whilst the Kindle DX is $489.  Now the difference in Kindle price is probably the primary deciding factor for many when choosing which amazon Kindle to buy because budget is usually the first thing to be considered when deciding to buy any new personal gadget.

Kindle Size

Whilst both are comfortable handheld e-readers, the Kindle 2 is definitely the most easily portable, measuring a mere 8″ x 5.3″ x 0.36″.  The Kindle DX on the other hand is a far more substantial 10.4″ x 7.2″ x 0.38″.

Kindle Screen Display

Both sorts of modern Kindle come with E Ink® technology screen displays.  What this means for the user is that the display reads pretty much just like ink on paper and is easy to view, with no glare even in bright sunlight.  The differences occur with regards to the actual size of that display.  The smaller reader has an adequate 6″ screen whilst the larger model comes with a whopping 9.7″ display.

Both use a good sixteen shades of gray to give clarity of viewing even for graphics and images.

Kindle View Rotation

It seems that since the launch of the iPhone we have all become a little obsessed with rotating screens!  Hardly a necessity, nevertheless it seems we like our gadgets to know which way is up.  Both readers from amazon will allow you to view pages in landscape or portrait.  However, only the Kindle DX has an automatic rotation capability – with the Kindle 2 you will need to tell the device if you wish to change your view.

Kindle Storage

This is another key difference between the Kindle DX and Kindle 2.  The smaller model has enough memory capacity to store up to 1500 books.  Pretty adequate for most of us.   But if you want to be able to carry around up to 3500 books then the Kindle DX is the one for you.

Kindle 2 & Kindle DX Similarities

There are numerous issues that create a winner in the battle of the Kindle 2 vs Kindle DX different for each buyer.  And, there are countless similarities that make both amazon Kindle readers a great choice for so many of us!

Well, apart from the points above an awful lot of what the two ebook readers from amazon have to offer is pretty much the same.  Same global wireless technology allowing for near instant downloads of new titles or your online library of previously bought ebooks.  Access to over 1.8 million free, out-of-copyright, pre-1923 books.

Both have built in PDF readers so you can study your work documents easily.  Both have a slightly experimental ‘read to me’ feature that basically gives you an audio book experience.

Both readers now offer access to wikipedia and include a basic web browser useful for using text based websites.

Both have six different font sizes to choose from and a zoom feature useful for viewing graphics and images.  Again both readers come with a full QWERTY keyboard at their base allowing for really easy note taking.  You can highlight passages, clip text and bookmark pages.  And, just as any good ebook reader, both contain an inbuilt comprehensive dictionary (the New Oxford American Dictionary).

As you can see there are plenty of differences, and plenty of similarities between the Kindle 2 and Kindle DX!

  1. Is there a light on either of the kindle for easy viewing in the dark?

    • @ Amanda – no there is no light fitted to the current Kindle Readers. But – you can buy book-lights that clip onto the device (usually around $10 – $20), or covers with lights built in.

  2. is there a difference in speed to both kindle

    • Not really Dania. The speed will depend on the wi-fi or 3G signal used, not the device itself. The 3G version just gives you the flexibility of using 3G if there is no wi-fi signal where you are.

  3. Kindle DX says it has free Free 3G Wireless? Is this a significant difference from Kindle Fire?

    • @ Knokne – this is different as the Kindle Fire is only wi-fi. But if you want 3G for surfing online the Fire will be a much better choice. The DX will be most useful if you need 3G to download new books and will mostly be using the device for reading.

  4. kindle Dx able for dowwnload apps and games?
