Buy the Kindle Wireless Reading Device (6″ Display, Global Wireless, Latest Generation)

The Kindle 2 Handheld Ebook Reader is currently the best selling portable reading device available worldwide.  There are several reasons, it is in stock, it is reasonably priced (currently reduced to $259), good to look at, does more than you could need and has an extremely high specification.

Of course the reason it has gone from being simply one of the best selling electronic items to the number one best selling item with amazon.com is because it can now be shipped to over 100 countries worldwide.

The Kindle 2 Portable Ebook Reader Specification

So, what do you get with the Kindle 2 Global Edition?  Read on to find out…

  • A truly portable reading device, with a size of 8″ x 5.3″ x 0.36″ and a weight of only 10.2 oz it is lighter than a paperback and thinner than most magazines.
  • Easy to read screen.  The 6″ screen is made to closely resemble ink on paper and is not backlit so will not make for tired eyes like reading on a computer screen might.  16 shades of grey make this one of the sharpest resolutions available with good contrast for comfortable viewing of images and newspapers.  The text size can be altered to suit your sight, with six font sizes available.
  • Memory Capacity – 2GB (of which approximately 1.4GB is available for your own use) allows for an entire library to be stored on one device.  Up to 1500 books in fact can simply be stored on your one Kindle Reader.
  • QWERTY keyboard to make taking notes simple.
  • Dual controls so you can turn pages and so on with both your left and right hand.
  • Battery life. With the wireless feature turned on you should be able to read for one week and with wireless turned off you should have two weeks of continuous read time.
  • Battery charge time is approximately four hours and can be done with the American power adaptor or the USB cables supplied.
  • Wireless connectivity.  In the US the Kindle 2 has free access to amazon’s own Whispernet service, with backup from 3G phone signals.  In most other countries that can currently receive shipment of the reader, a free 3G mobile service is used.  With wireless connectivity you can order new titles, or download from your online library direct from the reader.  In regions where no wireless connectivity deal has been agreed you will need to make purchases from a computer and then save them to the reader with the USB cable.  If you take the Kindle 2 Global Edition from one country to another that supports the 3G wireless technology you will be able to download new material freely.  Click for the full international wireless coverage map or read our previous article (European Kindle Wireless Coverage).
  • USB connectivity.  Wherever you are you can use the USB lead to connect to your PC or Mac to download personal documents as well as ebooks and upload your annotations.
  • Content from multiple formats is supported – Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, Audible (Audible Enhanced (AA, AAX)), MP3, unprotected MOBI, PRC natively; HTML, DOC, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP (through conversion).
  • Inbuilt edictionary.  The Kindle 2 comes with an electronic copy of The New Oxford American Dictionary to allow speedy clarification as you are reading.
  • Kindle Warranty.  The Kindle 2 comes with an automatic one year manufacturer’s guarantee.  For an additional sum of $65 US customers can buy a 2 year extended warranty.  This gives two years coverage for any fault with the reading device and up to one claim for accidental damage during this period.

The Kindle 2 Handheld Ebook Reader then packs a lot into its reasonable price tag.   It is designed to be reasonably tough but most owners agree a Kindle 2 Cover is a must, so do consider which case to buy when you buy your ebook reading device.  Here at the Handheld Ebook Reader Reviews site we will look at the features of this and other reading devices in more detail, but for now, this article will hopefully have provided you with the key specification points of the Kindle 2 Reader.
